Celebrating Yna’s entrance admission test in 10th grade at the Athénée High School of Luxembourg.

Constant encouragement from my tutor in times where my goal seemed impossible to achieve and patience in particular when I wasn’t understanding easily helped me progress.

  1. Could you please present yourself?

Hello , my name is Yna Akeyo Patemo, I am fifteen years old and I live in Luxembourg, although I am of Kenyan origin. I am currently in 10th grade at the Athénée High School of Luxembourg.

2. Which subject did Miss Yim tutor you in?

Miss Yim tutored me in French as well as in Mathemetics in preparation for the 10th grade admission programme at the Athénée, which wasn’t covered by my programm at the International school of Differdange.

3.How did you come to know Miss Yim ?

Well, I got a recommandation from a good friend of my mother whom daughter Miss Yim had been tutoring.

4. How many hours did you have?

With Miss Yim, I had two hours in Math and one hour in French weekly, leading to a total of three hours a week for six months.

5. What did you enjoy most about her tutoring?

I loved how she was flexible and would walk you through a topic from the basics at the very bottom, slowly going up until you were accustomed to the topic. When I began my tutoring sessions, I lacked the basic knowledge in all topics I was expected to know in both French and Maths but with time, I was happy with the progress we’d made together.

I also loved how she managed to teach and get her point through even at impossible situations like during the quarantine home schooling linked to the covid-19/coronavirus.

6. What were your grades after and before tutoring?

My tutoring with Miss Yim was mainly for the IB programm admission test, especially in Maths. But in French through after having a D in French, I climbed up to a C.

7. What helped you progress?

Constant encouragement from my tutor in times where my goal seemed impossible to achieve and patience in particular when I wasn’t understanding easily.

8. How was the tutoring session?

The tutoring sessions were incredible, with the right balance of fun moments as well as serious ones in which we’d spend studying. Miss Yim taught me to be independant by teaching me what I had to know by specific topics then letting me practice by giving me exerciceson the topics we covered together. She’d also encourage me to practice what we’d been learning on websites to broaden the knowledge we already had.

9. What is your relationship with Miss Yim?

Miss Yim is a warm and lively Teacher. As much as she is a good Teacher to me, I consider her a friend as well. Miss Yim is friendly and lively, she is also talkative like me which makes it easier to be free with her. She is also an incredible Teacher and during my tutoring sessions I did not only meet a good Teacher, I also made a friend.

10. Why did you choose the IB programm?

From past experience, my choice for the IB programm was rooted mainly by the fact that it was similar to the system offered in my home country, it would open doors to bigger opportunities. Personally, I would like to go to the Miami University.

10. What would you like to do after High School?

After High School I want to be a Psychologist, but I recently found an interest in the business world. So, I would love to become a business woman or an Entrepreneur because I am lucky to live in Luxembourg which is a very nice country for business and entrepreneurship.
